Every move in the pipeline borrows the authority of a register it does not occupy. The borrowings are not the same one twice — and that is not sloppiness. It is the only way to get what ego needs.
A note before reading. This is a structural supplement, not an introduction. It assumes you know the moves by number and have met the three registers — formal, analytic, empirical — in the FAQ. If you haven't read the Pipeline first, this page will read as notation. Start there; come back when you want to see where each move gets its authority from.
A claim is coherent when its claim-type matches its ground-type. Mathematics claims derivability and has it. A definition claims meaning-containment and has it. An observation claims a referent and has one. The pipeline never occupies a register — it reaches into whichever one supplies the authority the current move requires, and moves on before the bill arrives.

The empirical costume is put on here. Everything downstream wears it. Rain produces wet ground — a real effect. This produces a thought, and nothing else.

Upgrade to Necessity

Implications have no installation date. This rule has one, and a strengthening curve, and it varies with personal history. A relation with a biography is a mechanism, not an implication.

Actually hasGenuine ground — but for a different claim. A contraction occurred is true and referent-bearing. A stupid self exists is not.
The purest substitution on the ladder: the warrant belonging to one claim is transferred to another that has none. Real seal, empty letter.

Identity as Premise

Layer 2's transition is usually described as dropping the "if." On this axis it is a promotion: a claim that failed as a finding is reinstalled as a starting point.

Claims the authority ofAnalytic — immunity Nothing counts against it. No outcome can disturb it.
Actually hasCircularity Immunity purchased by feeding the conclusion back into the premise.
"Bachelors are unmarried" is legitimately immune to evidence — and says nothing about the world. This wants the immunity and the worldly content. It is the exact configuration the framework condemns.

Domain Jump

Claims the authority ofEmpirical — causation "Being stupid produces failure." A force operating in the world.

The framework already names this a domain jump on the relation axis. It is a register claim too — the strongest worldly assertion in the whole chain, made from the weakest ground in it.
Moves 10–11
Final Equivalence
Being ⇔ Doing ⇔ Having
Claims the authority ofAnalytic — definition "My failures are me." Not derived. Simply what the words mean.
Actually hasStipulation Self-imposed, not meaning-derived. Nobody agreed to this definition, and no meaning contains it.
The ladder ends by finally declaring a register — and it declares the empty one.
The dilemma the rule spends its life avoiding
Force it to declare a register at Move 2 and it dies either way
Declare it analytic — "smart" just means "one who understands" — and the inference is valid by meaning alone. Then "I am smart" is a relabeling of the event. Nothing standing has been established, because definitions do not produce entities. Necessary, and empty.
Declare it empirical and A ∧ ¬B is possible, counterexamples bite, and the whole thing degrades to "this happened, under these conditions." Informative, and powerless to establish anything timeless.
Ego needs the necessity of the first and the reality of the second: a claim about a real self that no evidence can touch. So it never declares. Press it as empirical and it retreats to obviously. Press it as definitional and it insists no — really stupid. The ambiguity is not a lapse. It is load-bearing.
Where the ladder ends
The hardening lands on the horn it spent Layer 1 avoiding
At Move 2 the rule refuses to be definitional, because a definitional identity would be empty. By Move 11 it is definitional: Being ⇔ Having, no derivation, no direction, identity as brute fact. "My failures are me" is unfalsifiable precisely because it has become a stipulation about what words mean.
Which is the empty horn. The move that makes the identity unquestionable is the same move that makes it say nothing. Total immunity, zero content. The hardening does not complete the construction — it dissolves the last thing the construction was claiming to be about.
Why the swapping is structural, not sloppy
No single register could supply what ego needs
Look at what the chain requires: necessity at Move 2, factuality at Move 3, evidence at Move 4, undeniability at Move 5, axiom-standing at Move 6, immunity at Move 8, causal force at Move 9, definitional finality at Move 11.
The formal and analytic registers supply necessity and immunity, and no worldly content. The empirical register supplies worldly content and evidence, and no necessity or immunity. Ego wants all of it. No register offers all of it. So the ladder is not a series of mistakes — it is the only route to a combination that does not exist, and each rung is where the borrowing can be caught.
Two rungs are green. The event at Move 0 really happened. The contraction at Move 5 is really occurring. The chain is real at both ends and borrowed in the middle — which is why seeing through it never requires denying anything you actually experienced.
